This course provides students with an understanding of descriptive and inferential statistical tools, data analysis of biological data and epidemiological studies, and the ability to read and critically evaluate the statistical sections of journal articles. The course planned to introduce basic statistical concepts to analyse biological data to enable students to make decisions, interpret and present data, use probability distributions, confidence intervals, test hypothesis, and measure sample size and power.

This course explores core ethical principles in healthcare with a primary focus on promoting patient safety and ethical decision-making. It highlights the specific challenges faced by medical laboratory professionals, including occupational hazards to healthcare workers (HCWs) that may impact patient outcomes. Topics include ethical considerations in transplantation, organ procurement, withdrawal of care, treatment refusal, and respecting patient autonomy.

Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the ethical, legal, and regulatory frameworks that support safe, patient-centered care in both clinical and research settings. Through case-based learning and practical applications, the course emphasizes cultivating empathy, integrity, respect, and professionalism within multidisciplinary teams to enhance patient safety and uphold ethical standards in healthcare practice.

This advanced course will cover the mechanisms of hematopoiesis and the pathophysiology of hematopoietic disorders, providing an in-depth exploration of red and white blood cell development, blood coagulation processes, and their clinical implications. Students will acquire advanced knowledge of the diagnosis, management, and monitoring of hematological and coagulation disorders, with a strong emphasis on laboratory techniques and quality assurance in hematology labs.

Practical and clinical sessions are designed to equip students with advanced skills in hematological and coagulation assays, bone marrow evaluation, and diagnostic techniques such as flow cytometry, ensuring competence for professional and research-based careers in hematology and transfusion medicine.

The course will allow students to expand their knowledge on immunology and its application in clinical and laboratory practices. The course focuses on the essential features of the immune system, including its role in disease mechanisms, autoimmunity, hypersensitivity, transfusion reactions, and transplant immunology. Students will also gain skills in immunological diagnostic techniques and designing laboratory-based projects.

The curriculum integrates theoretical concepts with clinical applications, emphasizing immunological processes related to transfusion medicine, such as HLA typing, immunophenotyping, and immune responses to infections. The course will also explore vaccine development and immunization strategies relevant to blood transfusion practices. Students will be equipped with the research and communication skills needed for advanced study and professional practice in transfusion medicine.

The course introduces advanced knowledge about the scientific method, research design, sampling, statistical analysis of data and critical appraisal. The course offers students the opportunity to conduct research on topics within their field of study preparing them for thesis.

This elective course will focus on topics related to industry of blood driven therapies. Students will explore the principles and technologies underlying plasma fractionation, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapies, and cellular engineering, while examining the impact of genomics, proteomics, recombinant DNA, and gene editing techniques on personalized medicine.

The course also addresses the emerging landscape of intellectual property considerations, patent strategies, and the development of blood substitutes.

This elective course will cover up-to-date topics in stem cell technologies as they apply to cellular therapies in blood banking and transfusion medicine, in aligning with current standards and guidelines from the AABB in cellular therapies.

This course explores donor selection and management, focusing on the principles, procedures, and practices essential for safe and efficient blood donation. Students will gain knowledge and skills in evaluating potential donors, managing donor care throughout the donation process, and handling reactions and complications.

The course also covers advanced topics such as apheresis donation, stem cell donor management, ethical and practical aspects of donor selection, including the use of motivational strategies to enhance donor retention.

This course offers a comprehensive examination on immunohematology principles, focusing on the preparation, storage, and specialized processing of blood components. Students will engage deeply with complex ABO and Rh typing case scenarios, explore extended blood group systems, and skill at antibody detection and identification techniques. Through both theoretical and clinical application, students will be able to perform serological and molecular assays, ensure accurate crossmatching and compatibility testing, and quality assurance measures.

In this course, students will learn effective communication skills they will use in their practice. They will gain an understanding of the importance of good communication, proper written and nonverbal communication, conflict resolution, and how to deal with difficult types of patients. This will include an introduction to establishing rapport with patients and eliciting and responding to patient emotions. Students will learn about specific factors that influence the healthcare provider-patient relationship. Students will simulate patient communication through role plays.
