Program overview

The Master of Science in Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing (MSNIC) program was launched to meet the Saudi healthcare market’s need for qualified, compassionate, and competent Saudi Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse Specialists who can provide culturally sensitive holistic care and improve the quality of care in all healthcare sectors. Graduates from the MSNIC Program have high expectations of employment, which are very challenging to meet in the current managerial post in the intensive care facilities within the Kingdom. Growth and Saudization will make the healthcare sector one of the top fields in which there will be a high demand for graduates. In addition, graduates of the MSNIC Program will be well prepared with the required advanced skills and clinical training to succeed in their endeavors to deliver healthcare within the Kingdom and beyond.

  • It is 2-year academic program to get the Master of Science in Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing.
  • The Master of Science in Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing requires passing (42) credit hours, including the thesis.

How will you learn?

The MSc Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing program aims to adopt student-centered learning approaches by utilizing various interactive learning strategies throughout the program. The curriculum is delivered through integrated learning methods. Through different teaching and learning strategies, including curricular and extra-curricular activities to achieve the program learning outcomes in all areas. This includes interactive lectures, small group discussions, team-based learning, assignments, tutorials, flipped classes, research activities, student-prepared presentations, case-based learning, and practical demonstrations. 

How will you be assessed?

The MSc Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing program uses different assessment methods to assess the student’s achievement.

1)Written assessments include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Multiple choice questions (MCQs; A-type questions with one best answer)
  • Essay-type questions.
  • Projects and assignments (in each course)

2) Clinical assessments include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Portfolio including case-based discussion, assignments, students prepared presentations, and professional code of conduct.
  • High Fidelity OSCE and competency check-off
  • Workplace-based assessment.  

Careers Overview:

Upon successful completion of the requirements for the Master of Science in Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing, the Saudi Commission for Health Specialists (SCHS) will grant the graduate equivalence title of Senior Nurse Specialist. Graduates can apply for jobs in the health sector, nursing/, and nursing education. They can also apply to be lectures in university or college. The main specialty is neonatal intensive care. 

Job Prospects:

Neonatal intensive care specialists can provide direct care to sick neonates in the NICU. They can also provide health promotion services. Program graduates can also provide in-service education for nurses in the NICU in addition to lecturing in colleges or universities. They can participate in conducting research activities and quality improvement activities related to neonatal care in the NICU. As expected, the graduates from the MSc Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing can serve in leadership positions such as head nurse, nurse manager and beyond.

Career Advice:

The MSc Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing program is a relatively new program in Saudi Arabia. The graduate from this program has a great opportunity to work in many positions with regard to neonatal health care and health promotion. Graduates may work in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units as clinicians, educators, or managers. They also may work in education as a lecturer or clinical instructor in colleges or universities. Graduates also may seek some positions in the health promotion of neonates in health care centers. All students are invited and encouraged to constantly meet with career counselors assigned by the Student Career and Alumni Unit (SCAU). Student career counseling is a process that helps students to know and understand their skills, abilities, and interests and how they relate to the workplace in order to make an appropriate decision concerning their future career path. It is a dynamic and collaborative process between a faculty staff member and student, focused on the student’s needs and goals.
