Brain Awareness Day (Know the Maestro)

Brain awareness week, special event as part of FCMS - IBRO and Dana Foundation's Brain Awareness Week

Brain Awareness Week is a global campaign dedicated to increasing public understanding of the progress and benefits of brain research. In collaboration with the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) and the Dana Foundation, FCMS organized a special event to celebrate this initiative, aiming to engage the community in exploring the fascinating world of neuroscience. The brain, as the control center of the body, plays a vital role in regulating all aspects of human function, yet many myths and misconceptions about its capabilities persist. This event provided a unique opportunity to educate participants about brain anatomy, function, and health through hands-on activities, games, and interactive exhibits. By combining science with creativity, the event sought to inspire curiosity, promote brain health awareness, and foster a deeper appreciation for ongoing research in this critical field.

Goals and Objectives

Goals of the Activity:

  • To increase awareness and understanding of brain structure, function, and neuroscience research among students, faculty, and the broader community.
  • To dispel common myths and misconceptions about the brain through interactive and engaging educational activities.
  • To promote healthy lifestyle choices, including nutrition, that support brain health and cognitive function.
  • To foster interest in neuroscience and encourage participants to explore careers or further study in brain science.
  • To highlight the differences and connections between the human brain and artificial intelligence, stimulating critical thinking about technology and cognition.
  • To create an inclusive and interactive learning environment that encourages curiosity and dialogue about brain health and neuroscience.

Description of learning outcomes achieved through the activity

Learning Outcomes:

  • By the end of the Brain Awareness Week event, participants will be able to:
  • Describe basic brain anatomy and recognize key structures using experimental and anatomical models.
  • Distinguish between common myths and facts about the brain, improving their scientific literacy regarding brain function.
  • Identify dietary choices that support brain health and explain their benefits.
  • Understand the fundamental differences between the human brain and artificial intelligence, fostering awareness of both biological and technological cognition.
  • Demonstrate increased interest and curiosity in neuroscience and brain research through active participation and engagement.
  • Apply knowledge gained to promote brain health in their daily lives and encourage informed discussions about neuroscience within their communities.

Day and Date: 7th May 2025

Time: 11 am-1 pm

Venue: FCMS, ground floor

Targeted Audience: FCMS faculty staff and students

Description of the activity

As part of FCMS’s participation in the IBRO and Dana Foundation’s Brain Awareness Week, a special event was organized to engage students, faculty, and visitors in a dynamic exploration of brain science. The event featured a variety of interactive and educational stations designed to promote public understanding of the brain and its functions. Highlights included a **microscopic illustration station** showcasing brain experimental models, allowing participants to observe brain tissue under the microscope and learn about neuroanatomy at the cellular level.

Participants also enjoyed a **"Brain Myths and Facts" game**, which helped dispel common misconceptions about the brain in an engaging format. A **"Healthy Food for the Brain" corner** provided information on nutrition that supports cognitive health, accompanied by brain-friendly snacks. The **Giveaway Booth** offered themed souvenirs to raise awareness and encourage participation.

A **“Human Brain vs. AI” awareness station** sparked thought-provoking discussions about the differences and similarities between natural and artificial intelligence. Additionally, **anatomy models** of the human brain were on display, providing hands-on learning opportunities and detailed explanations of brain structures and their functions. The event successfully combined science, fun, and community outreach, in alignment with the global mission of Brain Awareness Week.
