Antismoking Anti-addiction Day

Tobacco use and substance addiction remain major public health concerns that threaten both individual well-being and community health. In alignment with Fakeeh College for Medical Sciences' (FCMS) mission to promote preventive health education, Year 4 MBBS students, under the supervision of Dr. Maryam, organized the Antismoking &Anti addiction Awareness Day. The event aimed to educate students on the dangers of smoking and substance abuse, while promoting healthy alternatives and lifestyle choices through an interactive awareness campaign..

Goals and Objectives

Raise awareness about the health risks associated with smoking and substance addiction.

  • Educate students on preventive strategies and support options for quitting.
  • Promote healthy lifestyle choices through positive reinforcement.
  • Encourage peer-to-peer education and student-led public health initiatives.
  • Create a supportive environment for open dialogue around addiction and recovery.

Description of learning outcomes achieved through the activity

Participants gained a clearer understanding of the physical, psychological, and social consequences of smoking and addiction. Through informative materials and peer interaction, students learned how to communicate public health messages effectively and how to apply preventive strategies in real-life scenarios. The campaign strengthened the communication, leadership, and teamwork skills of the student organizers, while attendees were encouraged to make informed, health-conscious decisions

Brief description of the activity

The event featured an engaging on-campus campaign led by Year 4 MBBS students and supervised by Dr. Maryam.Students prepared and displayed educational posters, distributed flyers containing facts about smoking and drug addiction, and handed out giveaways and healthy snacks to reinforce positive choices. The campaign provided a welcoming space for students to ask questions, share insights, and reflect on the importance of maintaining a smoke-free, addiction-free lifestyle.

Staff participation in the activity: 20

Student participation in the activity: 45 student organizers (Year 4 MBBS)

Approximately 130 student attendees from various departments, as documented in the attached attendance list:

  • MBBS: 60 students
  • PharmD: 45 students
  • Nursing: 25 students

Participants’ Feedback

  • Student satisfaction survey results: 4.7/5 (94%)
  • Students appreciated the practical content and peer-led format. Many expressed that the interactivenature of the event made the message more impactful and memorable.

Conclusion

The Antismoking & Anti addiction Awareness Day at FCMS was an important educational campaign thatcombined peer advocacy, creativity, and health education. The initiative successfully raised awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco andsubstance use while promoting healthier alternatives. The student-led effort demonstrated strong collaboration and leadership, reflecting the college’scommitment to developing future healthcare professionals who are engaged inpublic health promotion and community well-being.
